In the Wake of The Ebola Outbreak, NEC Holds Consultations With Civil Society Organizations on Special Senatorial Election August 8th, 2014

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has begun holding a string of consultations with stakeholders in the electoral process on probable impact of the Ebola outbreak on the October 14, 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

The first in the series of meetings was with civil society organizations on Tuesday, August 5 at the NEC   Headquarters in Monrovia.

More than 20 Civil Society Organizations involved with Electoral activities in Liberia under the banner of the Elections Coordination Committee attended the meeting.

The Chairman of NEC, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, said the current Ebola outbreak in Liberia may hamper major activities that pertain to the Electoral process.

Chairman Korkoya said such activities include mass gathering of people for campaigning, deploying of staff to all parts of the country as well as conducting outreach activities for Civic/Voter Education in communities, among others.

He said these activities could be hindered by the current upsurge in the Ebola Outbreak across the country.

He said the current Ebola outbreak in Liberia may affect the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible election on October 14, 2014.

Representatives of civil society institutions who attended the meeting said there is an increasing need for the Commission to expand the scope of the consultations in order to get a broader perspective of stakeholders in the process.

They argued that the Election date is set by the Constitution of Liberia and adjusting it would have legal and constitutional implications. The civil society organizations have meanwhile intimated that they would hold consultations among themselves and present their position to the Commission at a meeting to be conducted this Friday.

The Commission will conduct similar consultation with registered political parties and individuals whose names appeared on the provisional listing of candidates to contest the October 14 Election.
