NEC Settles Intra Party Disputes in National Patriotic Party and True Whig Party ……………..Says It Still recognizes Cllr. Gould as Chairman of NPP October 9th, 2013

The Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) says it still recognizes the authority of Cllr. Theophilus Gould as the Legitimate Chairman of the National Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Board’s decision was announced Wednesday at a meeting held with conflicting parties of the party at the headquarters of the Commission in Monrovia.

Making the pronouncement at the meeting, the Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya, said the decision by some partisans of the NPP to remove Cllr. Gould from the position of Chairman violated the By-Laws and Constitution of the NPP.

During the meeting, the Commission mandated Cllr. Gould to immediately proceed with the process that would lead to the conduct of a Party Convention on November 15 for the purpose of electing members of the Secretariat of the NPP.

At the same time, conflicting parties of the True Whig Party have resolved to hold a convention to elect new officials of the party.

The decision of the conflicting parties of the TWP was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding signed by them following a conference held Wednesday by the Board of Commissioners of the NEC.

The MOU was witnessed by the National Elections Commission.

During the conference, the Commission announced that it does not recognize the current leadership of the TWP given that its tenure has expired.

As a means of ensuring the credibility of the convention, the Peter Vuku and Reginald Goodridge factions were mandated to nominate three partisans each to a seven-member Convention committee that would prepare the way for the conduct of a convention.

The parties resolved that the Convention Committee be chaired by the Inter-Faith Mediation Committee.

The convention committee, recognized by the NEC will be charged with the responsibility to conduct a convention in line with the constitution of Liberia, the Elections Laws, regulations and guidelines of the National Elections Commission as well as by-laws of the True Whig Party.

The Wednesday Meetings with the two political parties were part of efforts by the Board of Commissioners of the Commission to resolve intra party disputes in the two political parties.
