Outgoing NEC Executive-Director calls for Support to 2014 Special Election November 6th, 2013

The Outgoing Executive-Director of the National Elections Commission has called on the relevant authorities of government to provide the commission with the needed funding for the successful conduct of the pending Voter Roll Update Exercise and the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

Mr. John Langley said the forthcoming election is a national election and must be taken seriously by all policy makers with the provision of the needed funding.

He said the commission needs to implement several major activities before the conduct of the polls on October 14, 2014.

He named the activities as the conduct of civic / voter education activities across the country, the procurement of elections logistics, the recruitment of staff as well as the conduct of January 13 to March 5, 2014 Voter Roll Update Exercise.

Mr. Langley made the call Monday at programs marking the official turnover of the Office of Executive-Director of the Commission and the launch of the Administrative Manual of the Commission in Monrovia.

Speaking earlier, the Incoming NEC Executive Director, Lamin Lighe, praised Mr. Langley for his contributions to establishing a credible National Elections Commission that is capable of delivering free and fair election.

Mr. Lighe also thanked President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for his appointment and pledged to work with NEC Commissioners and other staff to ensure the Commission carry out its statutory mandate successfully.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NEC, Jerome George Korkoya, lauded Mr. Langley for his invaluable contributions to the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible elections in the country.

Chairman Korkoya also lauded the UNDP for the preparation of an Administrative manual for the Commission. He noted that the manual would effectively guide the running of the Commission.

New employees as well as employees who have been appointed to new positions at the Commission received recognition during the program.

Mr. Langley served the NEC for a period of 29 years in various capacities at the Commission including Executive-Director for a period of seven years.
