 NEC COMMISSIONER UNDERSCORES IMPORTANCE OF GENDER MAINSTREAMING IN ELECTORAL PROCESSES September 10th, 2013

The Oversight Commissioner for Gender at the National Elections Commission (NEC) Davidetta Browne-Lansanah says the role of males and females are very critical in all aspects of the electoral process in Liberia.

Commissioner Browne-Lansanah said as a result, the promotion of Gender equality and equity in the light of encouraging the participation of women will remain the cardinal objective of the NEC in the forthcoming Voter Roll Update Exercise and the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

The NEC Commissioner made the assertion at the start of a two-day Gender mainstreaming workshop held for assistant elections magistrates and regional coordinators held in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

Commissioner Lansannah called on the participants to promote gender specific messages that would ensure massive participation both men and women in the electoral process.

The workshop was held on Gender Integration into the 2014 Voter Roll Update Activities at the St. Peter’s Claver Catholic High School in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

Two gender experts, Madam Loupu Garmi of Plan International Liberia and Madam Lawodo Nimley, Senior Gender Advisor of the Ministry of Gender and Development made presentations at the workshop.

The workshop was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).   

The Superintendent of Grand Bassa County was represented by her Administrative Assistant, Charles Cole, who lauded the NEC for conducting free, fair and transparent elections in Liberia over the years.

Mr. Cole underscored the need for women to be encouraged and given equal opportunities to participate in the social- economic and political governance of the country.

Presenting the overview of the workshop, the Director of the Gender Section at the NEC, Attorney J. Roseline Nagbe-Kowo, stressed that gender mainstreaming is very cardinal in all aspects of the electoral process of the country noting  Assistant Magistrates and regional Coordinators will be required make Gender Budgeting, Analysis and Participation key elements in their planning processes.
