 -Chairman Korkoya Tells Elections Magistrates

The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Jerome G. Korkoya, has described Elections Magistrates as the ‘nerve center’ of the elections commission in rolling out its key mandate of conducting regular free and fair elections.

Cllr. Korkoya made the observation Monday, July 29, 2013 in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County when he officially declared opened a one-week training workshop for NEC Elections Magistrates, Assistant Elections Magistrates, Regional Coordinators and Finance Officers in the thematic areas of “Financial Reporting and Report Writing”.

Chairman Korkoya further stressed that training enhances one’s skill and leads to qualitative performance and as such, it should be adopted as a continuous process to meet international best practices. He promised the NEC staff of continuous training opportunities as long as they are available.

“Because NEC essentially relies on donors’ support in cash and material, this training will help NEC staff account appropriately for the funding and materials received from donors from time to time”, Cllr. Korkoya said.

Held under the theme: “Enhancing NEC Staff’s Capacity Financial Reporting and Writing Skills” the training which is being facilitated by the Liberia Institute of Public Administration (LIPA) is part of the NEC staff capacity building initiatives that is being rolled out during this phase of the electoral cycle.

The training is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

Making remarks during the opening program, the Program Manager of IFES, Senesee Freeman said, IFES is keen on supporting all activities that the NEC undertakes with respect to the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

He urged participants to take the training seriously and participate fully, adding “NEC staff improvement on their financial reporting and report writing skills are very crucial in accounting for donors funding”.

The Director of Field Operations, Deddeh Buway, lauded the Commission and IFES for affording selected staff of the NEC the opportunity to undergo this vital training.

For his part the Deputy Executive Director for Operations (DEDO) at the NEC,  C.A. Lamin Lighe, said the Commission realizes the cogent role Magistrates and other technicians played in carrying out the Commission’s mandate of conducting elections and is certainly  conscious of the fact that the  quality of staff delivery capacity cannot be overemphasized.

Participants of the training will be awarded certificate of achievement at the end of the training.
