 ON THE OCCASION OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINAL RESULTS AND CERTIFICATION OF THE WINNER OF THE MAY 07, 2013 GRAND BASSA COUNTY SENATORIAL BY-ELECTION

INTRODUCTION

It is with a deep sense of humility that I come today, on behalf of the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission to perform this national task. Let me begin by thanking the Almighty God, for the divine guidance and wisdom he continues to bestow upon the Commission as it carries out is constitutional duty.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, it can be recalled that, consistent with Article 37 of our Constitution, the President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Hon. Gbehzongar Findley, on February 18, 2013, notified the Commission of the existence of a vacancy in the House of Senate



caused by the death, on January 17, 2013 of Senator John Francis Whitfield of Grand Bassa County.


Issuance of Writ of Election and Nomination of Candidates


In view of the above, the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission in collaboration with its partners successfully organized and conducted a Senatorial By-Election on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.


Pursuant to the decision of the Board of Commissioners, and in keeping with the electoral key dates, the period for nomination of candidates desirous of contesting the Senatorial By-Election ran from March 11 to 26, 2013.


Following the nomination process, four candidates were qualified to contest the Senatorial By-Election. The four candidates are:


  1. 1. T. Wah Bedell , National Patriotic Party
  2. 2. Daniel Lymus Chea, Independent Candidate
  3. 3. Jonathan Lambort Kaipay, Unity Party; and
  4. 4. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Liberty Party


Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, Members of the Press, The National Elections Commission (NEC) once again congratulates all registered voters of Grand Bassa County who turned out on May 7, 2013 to vote in the County’s Senatorial By-Election. 

The Commission also extends Special thanks and appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Liberia for its support to the electoral process in Grand Bassa County.


To the three political parties and the lone independent candidate that participated in the By-Election, we say thank you for your participation and cooperation during the course of the election. 


To you, the registered voters of Grand Bassa County, who spent hours under the sun to be heard through the ballot box, we congratulate you for exercising you right. 


The Commission further wishes to express thanks and appreciation to all poll workers, observer groups, the media, The Liberia National Police and its partners for their remarkable and  supportive role which resulted to the successful conduct of this By-Election.

Announcement of Final Results

Ladies and gentlemen, I am very pleased, on behalf of the Board Commissioners of the NEC, to declare that results from all 336 polling centers in the County have been reported and tallied. The final results of the By-Election are as follows:

Voter turnout for the By Election is 22.4%. 

by virtue of the authority vested in me as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the NEC, I do hereby declare Candidate Nyonblee  Karnga-Lawrence of the Liberty Party, Winner of the May 7, 2013 Grand Bassa County Senatorial By Election.

On behalf of the members of the Board of Commissioners and staff of the National Elections Commission, I congratulate Candidate Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence of the Liberty Party on the occasion of her victory in the Grand Bassa County Senatorial By-Election.


At this time, I call on Senator Elect Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence of the Liberty Party to come forth and receive her certificate of election.
