Chairman Korkoya Hails Elections Magistrates May 28th, 2013

The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Jerome Korkoya has observed that if the NEC is to succeed in fulfilling its mandates of conducting free, fair and transparent elections, then the magistrates must be trained in all areas of electioneering.

Chairman Korkoya indicated that during his tenure as Chairman of the NEC, staff in the field will be dear to him because as he puts it, “they are the backbone of the Commission.

Training of Elections Magistrates was very necessary for the growth of the NEC; Cllr. Korkoya said.

The NEC Boss made the assertion during a recent tour of Nine Magisterial areas spread across seven counties. The tour which ran from May 19- 23 took Chairman Korkoya to River Gee, Maryland, Grand Kru, Grand Gedeh, Nimba, Bong and Margibi counties respectively.

The tour was essentially intended to give the Chairman an insight of the inner workings of NEC field offices. It is also intended to give the Chairman an opportunity to have a feel of the situation under which magistrates and their staff work in the field and afford him an opportunity to have firsthand information of NEC field offices activities.

In his interaction with the field staff at various stages of the tour, Chairman Korkoya acknowledged the crucial role election magistrates play in the conduct of election and hail them for what he termed as “the sacrificial role they play in nurturing Liberia’s nascent democracy”.

While on the tour, Chairman Korkoya was thoroughly briefed of working condition of the field staff and some of the constraints and challenges they are beset with in the discharge of their duties.

In response, Chairman Korkoya invariably told Elections Magistrates that as Chairman of the NEC, he believes the magistrates are to the Commission what laboratory technicians are to hospitals. He called on all elections magistrates to conduct themselves properly because what they do means a lot to the Commission.

Since his appointment as Chairman of the Commission, the tour is the first major visit to NEC field offices. Later, Chairman Korkoya will visit other magisterial areas so as to appraise the condition under which NEC field workers operates.

Meanwhile, Chairman Korkoya has underscored the need to roll out a robust and vibrant Civic Voters’ Education programs in this phase of the electoral cycle and the magistrates will be very instrumental in this undertaking.
