 NEC New Commissioners Meet with Political Parties ---Promised Cordial Working Relationship April 17th, 2013

The Chairman of the newly reconstituted Board of Commissioners (BOC) of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, has indicated that the current BOC will prioritize the sustenance of the current relationship subsisting between the NEC and political parties.

Chairman Korkoya also assured political parties that the current BOC intends to increase the level of confidence building between the NEC and political parties by encouraging greater participation of political parties in all elections related activities undertakings of the commission.

Chairman Korkoya made the statement Wednesday, when members of the new NEC Board met with political parties at the first Inter Party Consultative Committee meeting held at the NEC since the reconstitution of the Board of Commissioners of the Commission by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The meeting was held at the NEC Headquarters in Monrovia.

During the meeting, Chairman Korkoya gave a detailed update of the impending Grand Bassa County Senatorial By-election to the political parties.

He added that there are 124, 280 Registered Voters, 176 Voting Precincts and 336 Polling Places spread across the county.

He said Civic Voters Education is ongoing across the county and political campaign is also ongoing peacefully so far without any report of violence. 

Earlier, the Executive Director of the Commission, John Langley, introduced all the newly appointed commissioners and gave their profile to political parties’ representatives present at the meeting.

For their part, political parties’ representatives cautioned the BOC that the manner in which they will handle elections in Liberia will ensure whether the nation will be peaceful or become a country of conflict.

The Political parties also promised to work cordially with the reconstituted Board in ensuring that they perform their mandate of conducting elections in a way that democracy will be advanced in Liberia.

Also present at the meeting was key partners of the NEC including the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), the European Union (EU), among others.
