New NEC Chairman promises to Ensure Public Confidence in the Commission April 4th, 2013

The New Chairman of the NEC, Jerome George Korkoya

(Monrovia; April 3, 2013); The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Jerome George Korkoya, has promised to make confidence building in the commission the major priority of his administration.

Chairman Korkoya said building public confidence in the National Electoral management body is important because the public needs to acknowledge the work of the commission as being credible, transparent and impartial.

The new NEC Boss called on employees of the institution to join him and other members of the newly reconstituted Board of Commissioners of the NEC in working towards ensuring the conduct of free, fair, transparent and credible democratic elections in the country.

He warned employees against partisanship at the institution as it is a violation of the Electoral Law of the country, noting that he has never gained political favor from any individual or institution or being a politician during the entire period of professional life.

Chairman Korkoya promised to work collectively with employees to identify and solve problems being faced by the commission.

The NEC Chairman made the statement Tuesday when he and four Commissioners of the NEC officially took office at a program held in the edifice of the James M. Fromayan Conference Hall at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission in Monrovia.

He lauded past commissioners and employees of the commission for conducting credible and transparent elections in the country in 2005 and 2011 respectively, promising to uphold this globally acclaimed record of the NEC.

Chairman Korkoya and four commissioners of the NEC were confirmed by the Liberian Senate last week following a confirmation hearing held by the Senate Committee on Public and Autonomous Agencies.

They were nominated by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on March 20, 2013 in keeping with Chapter 2, Section 2.2, of the New Elections Law of 1986, and as amended in 2003 and 2004.

Other members of the reconstituted Board of Commissioners of the NEC who took office Tuesday are:

1.    Sarah M. Jegede-Toe----Co-Chairman

2.    Commissioner Jonathan Weedor

3.    Commissioner Alhadji Asumana Kromah; and
