NEC, PUL Complete Media workshop

The National Elections Commission, NEC in collaboration with the umbrella organization of Journalists in Liberia, the Press Union of Liberia has ended the final in a series of a two-day validation workshops for the Code of Conduct for Journalists covering the October 10th, 2017 Presidential and Representatives Elections in Liberia in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The 30 journalists from Rural Liberia at the end of the Gbarnga Workshop on Monday, August 7, 2017, pledged to work within the framework of the Code of Conduct as they carry out their reportorial duties during all of the electoral processes in the Country.

The first of the series of the two validation workshops was conducted last week, Thursday August 3 2017 for 30 Monrovia based journalists at a local hotel.

The journalists gathering in the Gbarnga was organized by the Communications Section of the NEC in collaboration with the PUL and sponsored by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, IFES with funding from the United States Agency for International Development or USAID.

The journalists Code of Conduct among other things challenges journalists to create a level playing field and provide equal access to both genders, all Independent, political parties and their Presidential and Representatives candidates during the October 10th 2017 elections throughout Liberia. 

The Journalists Code of Conduct also calls on journalists to always double check their   stories when in doubts with the Commission and report them in a credible, balanced and accurate manner without any biases

The Liberian journalist’s code is calling on them not to broadcast or print hate speeches, inflammatory partisan propagandas that have the potential to incite violence during the elections.

The instrument also covers talk show hosts and journalists working through social media.
