Political Parties Express Concerns Over Funding Challenges for Special Election May 5th, 2014

Officials of registered political parties in the country have underscored the need for the provision of adequate funding to enable the successful conduct of the October 14, 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

The Political parties said the National Elections Commission (NEC) needs all of the support it can garner in order to ensure the success of the Special Senatorial Election.

The political parties said it is troubling to hear that the National Elections Commission is still struggling to acquire the funding needed to conduct the Special election which is an imperative of the Constitution of Liberia.

The political parties acknowledged that electoral activities are quite expensive and as such the need for the provision of the required funding for the conduct of the impending election cannot be overemphasized.

They intimated that with just few months away from the election, there was a need for government to provide the needed funding for the conduct of essential antecedent activities related to the exercise.

The political parties made the call Thursday at an Inter-Party Consultative Committee Meeting held with the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission in Monrovia.

The meeting was intended to discuss issues related to the conduct of the October 14, 2014 Special Senatorial Election and challenges being faced by the commission in conducting the election.

The political parties also expressed concerns over the trucking of people from one part of the country to another to register and participate in electoral activities across the country as well as campaigning outside of the official campaign period declared by the Commission.
