NEC Co-Chairman Underscores Importance of Ongoing Regional Consultations on Voter Roll Update Exercise January 23rd, 2014

The Co-Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) Sarah Jegede-Toe has described the ongoing Civic Voter Education and Gender Regional Consultations as critical to enhancing the understanding of stakeholders on the steps, procedures and significance of the Voter Roll Update Exercise.

Cllr. Toe said this is because the inclusion of Liberians on the current Voter Roll of the Country is a constitutional right that must be respected in the quest to collectively foster the strengthening of a democratic society in Liberia.

She said it is against this background that the NEC is collaborating with IFES to consult Liberians from all spheres of Life across the 15 political subdivisions of Liberia on the impending Voter Roll Update Exercise.

The NEC Co-Chairman made the assertions Friday in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, at the start of a string of Civic/ Voter Education and Gender Regional Consultations on the Voter Roll Update Exercise.

The first in a series of regional consultations were held simultaneously in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County and Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County respectively.

The Robertsport consultation brought together stakeholders from Bomi, Grand Cape Mount and Gbapolu Counties while in Zwedru, the consultation brought together participants from Sinoe, Maryland, Rivergee, Grand Kru and Grand Gedeh Counties.

The final phases of the consultations will be held this weekend in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County and Gbarnga Bong County.

The Buchanan Consultation will bring together participants from Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Rivercess Counties, while participants from Nimba, Bong and Lofa Counties will converge in Gbarnga, Bong County.

Participants of the ongoing consultations include County superintendents, district commissioners, city mayors, representatives of the National Traditional Council of Liberia, political parties, women and youth groups, religious organizations and media practitioners, among others.

Presentations are being made on various topics related to the Voter Roll Update Exercise including the Legal Basis for the Voter Roll Update Exercise, the various Steps in the Process, Civic/Voter Education Strategy for the Voter Roll Update Exercise, Gender and the Voter Roll Update, the Role of the Media in the Process, among others.

The Voter Roll Update Exercise originally planned to commence on January 13 was recently postponed indefinitely by the NEC due to Funding and Procurement problems.

A new date for the start of the exercise is expected to be announced very shortly
