NEC Fines Eight Registered Political Parties for violating constitutional Provision November 11th, 2013

The Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) has imposed a fine of Three Hundred United States Dollars (USD300.00) on eight registered political parties in Liberia.

The fine was imposed on the political parties due to their failure to comply with Article 83 (d) of the Constitution of Liberia.

The political parties include Unity Party, Liberty Party, Congress for Democratic Change, National Patriotic Party (NPP), Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), All Liberian Coalition Party (ALCOP), Grassroots Democratic Party of Liberia (GDPL) and Victory for Change (VCP).

The decision was taken Wednesday at a meeting held by the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission with the eight political parties concerned.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the NEC, Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya, said the political parties concerned did not submit reports of their assets and liabilities in time as required by Article 83 (d) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia.

He had earlier announced the imposition of a fine of 500 United States Dollars on the Political Parties concerned, but following an appeal from the political parties, such amount was reduced to 300 US Dollars.

The Political Parties are required to pay the amount in the coffers of the Government of Liberia at the Central Bank of Liberia within 30 days.

Meanwhile the NEC says it will shortly make public actions taken against other political parties who violated Article 83 (d) of the Constitution in the various categories announced on September 20 this year.

It can be recalled that on September 20, 2013, the NEC announced that all political parties in the country were in violation of Article 83 (d) of the Constitution of Liberia by their failure to publish on September 1, 2013 Statements of their assets and liabilities.

During the September 20 meeting it was resolved that political parties that have partially complied with the constitutional provision as well as those that have not submitted or published their statements, do so within the Friday, September 27, 2013 grace period.

Political Parties violating the Article 83 (d) of the Constitution were placed in five categories during the meeting of September 20, 2013
