NEC Chairman Calls for Budgetary Support to 2014 Special Senatorial Election September 1st, 2013

The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Jerome George Korkoya has called for the provision of US$15.3m for the conduct of the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

Chairman Korkoya said the amount will be used to facilitate and enhance the process of updating the voter roll of the country to ensure the inclusion of people who have attained the age of 18 years in keeping with the Liberian constitution.

“The Commission will also ensure the inclusion on the voter roll, individuals who have changed their locations since the 2011 voter registration exercise as well as Liberians who were not able to register during the 2011 Voter Registration Process due to the fact that they were not in the country at time.

Cllr. Korkoya said two hundred teams comprising 5 trained personnel per team will conduct the Voter Roll Update exercise which is expected to commence in January, 2014.

“If the NEC were to conduct a new voter registration exercise for eligible voters, the combined cost of the 2014 Special Senatorial Election and the registration process would be a staggering US$21m,” Cllr. Korkoya added.

He called on stakeholders, particularly political parties and civil society organizations in the country, to constructively engage the appropriate authorities for the speedy passage of the National Budget.

“This is intended to ensure the successful conduct of the 2014 Special Senatorial Election,” the NEC Chairman emphasized.

He added that the exercise would last for a period of 45 days and would cover the 1,780 voting precincts across the country.

The NEC Chairman made the disclosure at programs marking the opening of a two day Inter-Party Consultative Committee Workshop held  in Kakata, Margibi County, on August 29 and 30, 2013.

Chairman Korkoya lauded the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), for supporting the two-day workshop.

The workshop was held under the theme:  “Raising Awareness amongst Political Parties on the Voter Roll Update Process.”

Topics discussed at the workshop included The Legal Basis for the Voter Roll Update Exercise, Processes and Procedures for the Voter Roll Update exercise as well as  Civic/ Voter Education Program and Methodology, Recruitment and Training of Voter Roll Update personnel and Stakeholders participation in the Voter Roll Update Process.
