INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTORAL LAW REFORM (CLOSING STATEMENT) November 30th, 2012

Statement by the Acting Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Elizabeth J. Nelson

On the Occasion of the Closing Ceremony of the International Conference on Electoral Law Reform Process

Excellences, Members of the Press, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen:

The last two days of collective and frank deliberations at the two-day International Conference on the Electoral Law Reform process has been very rewarding. The inputs realized from the conference will go a long way in enhancing the amendment of the elections law of Liberia to reflect current reality.

I personally followed the discussions very closely and saw the interest and enthusiasm with which everyone contributed to the revision process. As a Commission, this interaction further gives us the courage and motivation to step up to the challenge of improving the processes and systems that lead to effective and credible elections management. This is paramount because election as a key element of democracy has to be nurtured, strengthened and sustained.

Ladies and gentlemen, as much as reforming the election laws of Liberia is an imperative for sustainable elections management, it is however befitting that we go about the process cautiously ensuring that those laws that do not required change or amendment be retained and those that are ambiguous or were only enacted for the purposes of the 2005 elections be appropriately amended.

In my view this is absolutely necessary as we collectively seek the enactment of an election law that will be applicable to the present electoral system and meet international best practices.

This new paradigm shift in the transformation of the electoral system of Liberia is an vital undertaking by the NEC with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

The NEC is very grateful to everyone, especially our special guests and international legal experts for their participation in the revision process.

I thank you!
